EOAH has consulted with the Veterinary College at the University of Florida regarding the canine influenza virus and found that the vaccine is not recommended for the general population. They also stated that it is not recommended for day to day services such as boarding, grooming and daycare, outside the areas were the virus has been reported.
Owners who are traveling to affected areas or events such as dog shows should vaccinate their pet against canine influenza. The vaccine is a series of 2 injections given 2-4 weeks apart with protective immunity developing approximately 7 days after the second vaccine is given. Therefore you must plan ahead to effectively protect your pet. The canine influenza vaccine requires an annual booster to continue to provide protective immunity.
There have been a few cases of the canine influenza virus reported in Ocala, Jacksonville, and South Florida. There have been no cases of the virus diagnosed at East Orlando Animal Hospital since 2004. We will continue to monitor the seriousness of canine influenza virus so that we can provide our clients with updated information and their pets with the best possible care.
