After recent comparison testing of the major products available, we made the decision to upgrade our current recommendation for prevention of heartworm disease, intestinal parasites and fleas to Sentinel, a product by Novartis Animal Health. Sentinel is a broad spectrum parasiticide that protects your pet against heartworm, roundworm, hookworm, whipworms and fleas with one pill. Sentinel protects your pets and your pet's environment by attacking fleas before they hatch.

This photo demonstrates how your pet becomes infected with heartworms. This is why monthly heartworm prevention is very important. Your pet can become infected just from stepping out of the house and can even be infected if they never leave the house! Mosquitoes have a way of getting into our homes, no matter how careful we are. They sneak in through an open window or a door as we are going in and out.

Sentinel is also very effective against fleas. The product does not kill adult fleas, but prevents eggs from hatching and larvae from progressing into pupae. See the diagram below for a more detailed explanation. This is an important step in keeping your pet and home free from fleas. These two stages (eggs and larvae) make up approximately 85% of the flea population! If we can prevent them from becoming adults, we ultimately kill the life cycle of the fleas. If you are seeing adult fleas in your home or on your pet, an adulticide, such as Capstar or Comfortis, will also be needed for a period of time.

The most effective way to reduce the risk of infection to your dog and your family is to maintain continuous, year-round protection. Hookworm, roundworm and whipworm infestations are zoonotic diseases, which means that they are transmissible to humans.
