Ear Cropping

Dr. Glenn has transformed thousands of floppy-eared puppies into elegant adults since he started ear trimming in 1977. Dr. Glenn and his trained staff members will work with you and your puppy to insure the best results for each individual surgery.

Most puppies are ready to have their ears trimmed at twelve weeks of age. You may not be sure when your puppy is ready, or have questions about the anticipated results or what to expect during the procedure. We encourage you to schedule an appointment with Dr. Glenn, he will carefully explain the procedure and give your puppy a full physical exam prior to the surgery. We feel that this presurgical examination is critical to insure the best results and to advise you on the best time in your puppy's development to have the ear trim procedure.

After your first visit with Dr. Glenn, your puppy's surgery will be scheduled. You will be advised to withhold food starting the evening before surgery. The morning of your puppy's ear trim you will meet with the surgery technician for about ten minutes. The technician will conduct a brief exam and obtain pre-anesthetic blood tests, and answer any additional questions you might have. We encourage a one night stay in the hospital which is included in the cost. Your puppy will be ready to leave the hospital later that afternoon.

The surgery is only the beginning of the ear trim procedure. Your puppy will have stitches on the margins of the ears, which will be removed prior to taping. The following care is expected after your puppy goes home:

  • Keep the ears clean
  • Follow instructions for any prescribed medications carefully
  • Keep all scheduled recheck appointments
  • Follow any additional instructions given during the ear taping procedure

This will help minimize the formation of excessive scar tissue, and prevent infection and discomfort of the ear.

Our veterinary technicians are trained by Dr. Glenn to carefully tape each set of ears to enhance the supporting cartilage. The taping procedure may take several weeks.

When the taping procedure is finished, you will have a happy puppy with beautiful ears to enhance his or her particular breed's appearance. Many dog owners throughout Central Florida have been delighted with the results of our ear trims, and we have photos which you can view during your visit. You will see why clients come from miles around just to have Dr. Glenn perform their puppy's ear trim.
