Wellness Exams
Since pets age differently from us, kittens need wellness exams every three weeks. We start these exams at 7 weeks of age with their vaccines up until they are 19 weeks old. Adult cats need wellness exams twice yearly. One year to us is like 4-5 years to our feline friends. Our pets may not always show obvious outward signs of pain, disease, or discomfort, but a veterinarian is trained to pick up early warning signs. Because of the fast aging process regular wellness exams will help pick up the rapidly changing signs.
What's in the Vaccination?
FVRCP (Feline Distemper, Chlamydia, Rhinotracheitis, and Calici Virus): Feline distemper affects the intestinal tract and blood cells and will also cause runny nose and eyes. Chlamydia, Rhinotracheitis, and Calici are all upper respiratory viruses that cause sneezing, runny eyes and nose, ulcers in the mouth, and pneumonia.
Feline Leukemia: this viral causes forms of cancer and breaks down the immune system.
Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV): this is a viral disease much like HIV in humans and is passed by the bite of an infected cat. This virus like leukemia also breaks down the immune system. We do have a combo blood test that screens for Feline Leukemia and Feline Aids.
Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP): this virus is almost always fatal and causes fluid in the abdomen. This disease is also very contagious and is passed through bodily fluids.
Fecal: stool sample taken to check for intestinal parasites — we are typically looking for hookworms, roundworms, whipworms, coccidia, giardia, and tapeworms. Deworming is done at your kittens first and second visits along with the fecal test.
Heartworm Preventative: heartworms are caused by mosquitoes therefore, it is imperative that your pet stay on heartworm preventative for life. Your technician will go over your preventative options.
Birth Control: Your pet can go into heat anywhere from 4 1/2 to 8 months of age. Neutering (castration) is performed on male cats. Spaying (ovariohysterectomy) is performed on female cats.
